1828

Edouard Remenyi was a 19th century violinist who held posts as Court Violinist to Queen Victoria and Louis Napoleon.

He was a lifelong friend of Franz Liszt, and is credited with discovering Johannes Brahms, finding the impoverished, 18-year-old genius playing in a saloon on the Hamburg waterfront.

1890

His nephew Mihály Remenyi, newly appointed Master Violin Maker, opened a tiny violin workshop in Budapest, Hungary.

He received numerous medals and distinctions for his instruments, which are still highly sought after today.

1908

The founder's two sons joined the firm. László became a violinmaker, gaining experience in Paris, Hamburg, London and Zurich.

Zoltán, the younger son, expanded the firm into many other areas of the music trade, including retail, manufacturing and distribution.

Surviving two world wars and economic & political upheavals, the business was confiscated in 1951 by the Hungarian communist regime.

The Remenyis arrived in Canada in 1959 and grew again from a tiny store on Toronto's Queen Street to the larger Bloor Street location in 1979.

We are now writing a new chapter in the Remenyi history book with the founder's great-grandson, the fourth generation of the Remenyi family serving the music community. In 2022, we moved from our renowned location on Bloor St to an expansive new flagship store in the Leaside neighbourhood.

2024 brought the addition of two piano showrooms in Oakville and Thornhill. Our goal remains to provide musicians, music lovers, and distinguished artists from around the world with the very best service, expert knowledge, and of course, a shared passion for music.
