This edition of Mozart’s 'Serenades' (Books 1-4) aims to encourage musicians to experiment with different sounds: the trios can be played by practically all instruments (strings, winds, piano) commonly used in home music-making today. This approach is entirely in keeping with their historical origins. Mozart composed the five wind Divertimenti during a period when he was experimenting with various sound combinations in his musical 'private life,' free from the pressures of commissions and popular success. While playing music with friends, he would exchange instruments, thereby creating ever-new textures. Thus, the 'Serenades' are as suitable as ever for interpretation with varying tone colors and instruments, and will hopefully stimulate musicians’ imagination and delight in experimentation.
