Growing up in Portland Oregon, Robert Mann was drawn to the great outdoors and wanted to be a forest ranger. But it was his parents' encouragement and the violin lessons he received that ultimately launched him on an incredible journey that spanned a lifetime and five continents. His passion for classical music saw him become a renowned violinist, composer, conductor, and teacher. From its formation in 1947, the Juilliard String Quartet set out to play classical pieces as if they were new and modern works as if they had been composed long ago. The group faced difficulty in blending four different personalities and talents into a cohesive ensemble. But by the time Mann retired from the group 51 years later, they had played nearly 6,000 concerts around the world, earned three Grammys, and had the pleasure of sharing their sound with such renowned figures as Glenn Gould, Aaron Copland, Leonard Bernstein, and Albert Einstein.
