Sebastian Lee (1805-1887) worked as a successful cellist and pedagogue, among others, in Paris and Hamburg. His school works, etudes, and duets are still used in lessons today. Numerous concert pieces for violoncello and piano from Lee's repertoire are also to be found.
The Gavotte op. 112 is an effective and multifaceted stylized dance that presents advanced students with challenging tasks. At the same time, the challenges of the instrument and its technical possibilities are considered: For example, the fast sixteenth configurations are well 'in hand', but at the same time produce a virtuoso effect.
Prerequisites for the composition include the experienced handling of pitches up to the sixth position, experiences with thumb positions and harmonics, skills in the play of double stops and ornaments, as well as good fluency of the left hand. Musically, the Gavotte offers the possibility to present different characters: It is necessary to create light 'airy' motifs, wide energetic chords, but also fast virtuoso passages. The piano part is simply set and is limited to a supporting accompaniment.
This edition is part of the Schott Student Edition series, which offers a diverse repertoire for lessons, concerts, and examinations in various levels of difficulty (from easy to difficult). For this purpose, popular standard works of music history are presented in a modern and clear print. The piano accompaniment is available for download for many pieces.
