What is the Yamaha SILENT Piano all about?

Many people do not realize that you can have an actual acoustic piano (both upright
and grand) that uses technology to allow the instrument to be played with headphones, meaning it can be played at any time or volume. Oftentimes, people may feel obliged to get a digital piano, especially if they have a smaller living space, so as to not disrupt other members of the home or neighbours. In 2026, a digital piano is an excellent option, make no mistake! But, for many, the touch or look of an acoustic piano is still irreplaceable. So, how does it work?

The way this technology works is by using a ‘silent bar’. This bar is activated either by pressing the middle pedal or by simply plugging in headphones. When the bar is activated, the piano hammer no longer strikes the strings, thereby 'silencing' the piano! So, how can the user hear anything at all? That's where the breakthrough technology enters the picture. The hammer movement is electronically tracked and now triggers the grand piano or upright sound through your headphones. Using audio chips that play exceptionally true sound quality, the user experiences accurate touch and action and brilliant sound. 

There are 2 headphone jacks for teacher/student practice, duets, or simply for a friend listening in. A great option for a parent listening to their child play the song they are working on while the rest of the house has already gone to bed! 

The control panel offers volume control, a metronome for practicing, other sounds to play such as electric piano, strings, organ, and harpsichord, as well as recording capability so you can hear your progress as you work! Some of the latest models can play back songs and rhythms for an even more dynamic learning process.
